October Events--A National View

As this blog gets more active in reaching its potential, it will initiate efforts to publicize gay, Asian male (GAM) social and community-building events. Here's our first stab:

This weekend is Pride in Atlanta, with a webisode viewing party at the popular Burkhart's club at 1482 Piedmont Ave. NE this Friday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. (7 p.m. showing). Admission is free. The sponsor, GAM-TV (www.gamTVusa.com) is showing its latest webisode: "Panda: Tale of a Gay Asian Bear." The other weekend events include its annual gay soiree at the Aquarium Saturday and its Pride Parade on Sunday. Atlanta Asians and Friends will have a Halloween Party on Sat., Nov. 2. Look for their Facebook page for more information.

The following weekend, Asians and Friends Chicago (www.afchicago.org) is having a Masquerade Party and Calendar Photo Shoot on Sat. Oct. 19. Any party guest interested can possibly be in its 2014 Calendar (to raise money for its Pride float). Wear a costume or fun things will be there to try on. Let the photo shoot begin! The fun starts at 7:30 p.m. at @mosphere, 5355 N. Clark in Chicago. Admission is free but a $5 donation to help with appetizers is appreciated. The group is also planning an Oktoberfest outing at the brand new Haufbrauhaus in Rosemont, Ill., on Thurs., Oct. 17. Visit their website for more details.

Finally, gay Asian film director H.P. Mendoza is having his "cult classic" film "I Am a Ghost" showing on Oct. 29 at the famous Castro Theater in San Francisco. Visit his Facebook page for more details.

Two Chicago Asian Groups Host HIV Fundraiser

With songs both sultry and sublime, two gay, Asian groups are joining forces to raise funds for a charity in the Philippines devoted to HIV awareness and testing.

At an event entitled “Love Forward: FINC/AFC Share the Love for Loveyourself Anglo,” Filipinos and Friends in Chicago (FINC) and Asians and Friends Chicago (AFC) are hosting a cabaret evening of local performers on Thursday, July 25, 7 p.m. (7:30 p.m. showtime) at @mosphere Bar, 5355 N. Clark in Chicago. Donation: $20.

Included in the roster of performers are cabaret singer “Madame X” and jazz dancer and musical-theater actor Chip Payos. Other acts include Angel Abcede, Divina Aleonar, Randy Ballesteros, Christine Bunuan, Jovie Calma and Emjoy Gavino.

The two groups are pooling resources for the first time, working together to help an organization in the Philippines called Loveyourself Anglo (www.loveyourself.ph), a non-profit based in Manila focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered HIV awareness, testing and prevention. The group is building a second health center in the heart of Manila to cater to the needs of the LGBT community. The Philippines has recorded a sudden rise in HIV cases and is ill-equipped to address the alarming rate of infection.

Both local Asian organizations were highly visible at this year’s Gay Pride Parade, with FINC winning the Best Overall Float that featured a lavish, pink “Sarimanok”--a legendary bird of the Maranao people who originate from Mindanao, a major island in the Philippines--with 40 costumed dancers, and Asians and Friends Chicago winning Best Organizational float, featuring a fashion designer in a gown he made out of popcorn. The two groups have been hosting separate events until now.

“We’ve known of each other and attended each other’s functions, but have just begun to understand the power of joining forces,” says Angel Abcede, president of Asians and Friends. “This was a great opportunity and a great reason to get members from both organizations to turn out.”

“Gay organizations here in the U.S. with ties to their home countries need to help our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters,” says Chip Payos, a FINC member and one of the co-organizers of the event. “HIV is an international concern.”

Asians and Friends Chicago is celebrating its 28th year serving the city with social and community events for the gay, Asian population and those who are interested in Asian cultures. It was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in 2010.

FINC is celebrating nine years of existence, hosting social functions targeting gay, lesbian and transgendered Filipinos in Chicago. The group has a large presence in the annual Gay Pride Parade, often working months in advance to build its float and choreograph 30-60 dancers.

Asians & Friends 'Popcorn Dress' to Debut at Pride 2013

Asians and Friends Chicago would like to recognize and salute long-time member and supporter, fashion designer Kevin Vong, who created and will debut a dress made from 10,000 single puffs of popcorn, each individually glued on over the course of an entire month.

The dress design, which blends his Laotian roots with the glamor of a 1940s and ‘50’s ball gown is the centerpiece of AFC’s “Gayflower” float, a high-masted ship that is set to sail as entry No. 19 in this year’s Chicago Gay Pride Parade.

Vong, whose designs have been seen in national soap operas and beauty pageants, is currently working in the fashion department of Columbia College. Each year, he strives to create an eye-popping gown for the viewing pleasure of Pride audiences. In years past, he’s attracted attention with gowns made from plastic grocery bags and from the covers of fashion magazines.

“Each year I try to top myself and use materials that no one would think of using,” the Chicago-based designer says.

A part of the diverse, gay, Asian community here in Chicago, Vong contributes to the melting pot of an increasingly formidable constituency. He and his partner John were legally wed last year in a local ceremony and support gay marriage on a state and national level.

“People tend to dismiss the extravagant expressions of our GLBT community as fluff,” says Angel Abcede, president of Asians and Friends Chicago’s Board of Directors. “But this dress is visually staggering and in a world that sees images from around the world via smartphones and tablets, it takes artistry, imagination and sheer determination to stand out. We applaud Kevin for his work and continue to value him as a member of Asians and Friends Chicago.”

Abcede will be wearing a “sister” dress made from corn husks that Vong also designed.
Vong’s dress made its debut at a private function in mid-June and after the Pride Parade will make appearances throughout the year at various AFC and other local functions. Visit www.afchicago.org.

Asians & Friends Chicago plans an ethnic dress-up pub crawl for Sat., May 11, 2013, to celebrate the city's Asian Pacific Islander month. They're calling it "Hug an Asian Day." Organizers say it's a great way to draw attention to the club and help members mingle into the larger gay club scene for that night.
